The Vagina Monologues is made up of various personal monologues read by a diverse group of women. Each of the monologues deals with an aspect of the feminine experience, touching on matters such as sex, sex work, body image, love, rape, menstruation, female genital mutilation, masturbation, birth, orgasm, the various common names for the vagina or simply as a physical aspect of the body. A recurring theme throughout the piece is the vagina as a tool of female empowerment, and the ultimate embodiment of individuality.
This events goal is to increase awareness, raise money, and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations. It grew quickly into a mass movement active on every continent since it was founded almost 20 years ago. It has become a crucial catalyst in the global fight to stop gender-based violence as it, attacking the silence that allows violence against women to continue
The Vagina Monologues reminds us with each performance that the personal is political, that speaking out can be an act of resistance.
